I spent my childhood in Newark, Delaware shooting hoops and hopelessly training for the X-Games. I was sure the countless hours I spent on the quarter pipe in my driveway would guarantee my success. However, halfway through high school, I realized I only had about a 50/50 shot of being the next M.J. or Tony Hawk, so I leveled with myself and abandoned those dreams for short careers in paintball, mountain biking, and XC running. I tried lacrosse too, but only because I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic—you kind of have to play.
Disappointment ensued as I graduated high school winning not one superlative, although today I'm confident I could get the vote for "Late-est Bloomer." I spent the following five years grinding out a journalism degree at CU Boulder and missed graduating with Cum Laude honors by just about as much as everybody else. Along the way, I met the right people at the right time and fell in love with photography. I thought I wanted to be a photojournalist because I found those stories and images most inspiring, but 2010 was a grim year for J-school graduates. Major newspapers were closing their doors, and print media shrunk.
Luckily for me, the world of commercial photography had peaked my interest. The immense amount of pre-production and know-how necessary for every shot fascinated me. I altered my course with new goals in mind and moved to NYC in 2012 to hone my skills and learn how to catch happy hour seven days a week. The city was incredibly transformative, though I returned to Colorado 18 months later—eager for fresh air and open spaces.
Today, I'm based out West in Denver, Colorado (though I call it the Midwest, and everybody from Illinois hates me for it). As my photography evolves, I still hold in highest regard the moments I’ve captured of real people doing real things coupled with the tireless effort and learning I found in commercial work. I strive to incorporate this finite eye for detail into all my images and am always eager to take on new projects that allow me to evolve. Thanks for checking out my work!
